LONDON, UK – Wednesday Season 2, Part 1, now streaming on Netflix, introduces a host of new characters, with one in particular drawing significant attention: Isadora Capri, Nevermore Academy’s new head of music. The role is played by actress Billie Piper, a former teen pop star and fan-favorite for her role as Rose Tyler in Doctor Who. Piper’s character is not only a musical prodigy but also a werewolf, adding a new layer of mystery and supernatural intrigue to the series.
Isadora Capri’s arrival at Nevermore is particularly impactful for Enid Sinclair (Emma Myers), Wednesday’s roommate and best friend, who is also a werewolf still learning to master her abilities. Capri is positioned as a potential mentor for Enid, offering a much-needed guide in navigating her powers. However, her interactions with Wednesday Addams (Jenna Ortega) are far more tense. The two characters, described by Piper as “control freaks,” immediately clash in a verbal duel marked by sharp wit and a shared drive for perfection.
Despite the initial friction, Piper suggests that there’s an underlying connection between the two. “They’re kind of alike, but they also rub each other the wrong way,” she told Tudum. Capri, herself a former musical prodigy, takes a special interest in Wednesday’s talents, often challenging her to explore her art beyond her controlled, methodical approach. According to Piper, Capri’s message to Wednesday is about the potential “cost” of her relentless quest for perfection, a theme that resonates with Capri’s own mysterious past.
A Star-Studded Cast and Creative Collaborations
The addition of Billie Piper is just one part of a star-studded cast for the second season. Piper expressed her joy in working with both the young cast and seasoned veterans like Joanna Lumley and Catherine Zeta-Jones, whom she and her mother had admired for years. She particularly enjoyed her experience with Zeta-Jones, with whom she shares a fireside duet in Episode 3, a cover of “Bad Moon Rising” by Creedence Clearwater Revival. Co-music supervisor Jen Malone praised the performance, noting that the two voices “work so well together.”
Piper was drawn to the role of Capri for her unique aesthetic and dual personality. She describes her as “a sort of floaty, liberal musician” with a “steely core,” a character who is both “porous and available to energy” while also being grounded. Piper drew inspiration from musicians like Florence Welch, Kate Bush, and Stevie Nicks for Capri’s look, which features warm tones and ’70s influences. This creative collaboration with costume designers Colleen Atwood and Mark Sutherland helped her fully inhabit the character.
The actress also praised the creative direction of Tim Burton, describing the experience of working with him as being “painted into his piece of art.” Her admiration for Burton’s work, which she says has influenced her since childhood, made the role a dream come true. As for her on-screen piano playing, Piper admits it was more “choreography” than actual skill, but her passion for music allowed her to convincingly mimic the performance.
