The high-stakes legal drama that has overshadowed the box-office success of It Ends With Us has finally come to an end.
On Monday, May 4, 2026, just two weeks before they were set to face off in a New York federal court, Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni announced a joint settlement.
The resolution brings a sudden halt to nearly two years of acrimonious litigation that began in December 2024.
While the specific financial terms of the agreement remain strictly confidential, the settlement effectively buries a case that had exposed the private communications of some of Hollywood’s biggest A-listers and threatened to pull Taylor Swift into the witness stand.
In a joint statement released by their legal teams, both parties attempted to pivot the focus back to the film’s central themes of domestic violence and survival.
“The end product—the movie It Ends With Us—is a source of pride to all of us who worked to bring it to life,” the statement read.
“Raising awareness, and making a meaningful impact in the lives of domestic violence survivors—and all survivors—is a goal that we stand behind”.
Crucially, the statement acknowledged that the production process presented significant “challenges” and noted that the concerns raised by Lively “deserved to be heard.”
The parties expressed a mutual commitment to workplaces “free of improprieties” and voiced hope that the settlement would bring “closure” and a more “respectful environment online”.
The Gutting of the Original Lawsuit
The settlement comes after a series of major legal setbacks for Lively. In April 2026, U.S. District Judge Lewis J. Liman dismissed 10 of the 13 claims brought by the 38-year-old actress.
Most notably, the judge tossed out her central allegations of sexual harassment and a hostile work environment.
Judge Liman ruled that Lively could not pursue these claims under federal or California law because she was an independent contractor with “substantial control” over the production—rather than a traditional employee—and because the alleged conduct occurred outside of California.
Despite this, the judge allowed Lively to proceed with claims of retaliation and breach of contract against Baldoni’s production company, Wayfarer Studios.
Lively had alleged that Baldoni and his PR team orchestrated a “smear campaign” that cost her an estimated $161 million in lost earnings and damaged her reputation.
One of the most dramatic twists in the lead-up to the trial was the potential involvement of Taylor Swift.
