Dakota Johnson opens up about wanting children, calls musicians “tricky” and stays silent on romance rumors linking her to Machine Gun Kelly.
Dakota Johnson has opened up about her love life, her complicated feelings about musicians and her hopes of becoming a mother, while refusing to confirm the latest romance rumors surrounding Machine Gun Kelly.
The 36-year-old actress made the candid comments in a new cover interview with Vogue, where she reflected on her long history of dating musicians and revealed that she would “really” like to have children.
Johnson has been romantically linked to several musicians over the years.
She previously enjoyed a six-year relationship with Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, who shares two children, Apple, 22, and Moses, 20, with his former wife Gwyneth Paltrow.
Before Martin, Johnson was involved with Drowners singer Matthew Hitt, while she was more recently linked to indie singer Role Model, whose real name is Tucker Pillsbury.
Now, Johnson has found herself at the center of fresh speculation involving Machine Gun Kelly, although the actress has declined to comment on her current relationship status.
During her Vogue interview, Johnson was asked about knowing and dating so many musicians.
Asked why she seemed to have a connection with them, the actress joked: “They like me. I don’t know what to say. And I like them.”
When pressed on what she doesn’t like about musicians, Johnson laughed before delivering a blunt assessment.
“A lot! A lot. Tricky motherf***ers,” she said.
Despite the playful remark, Johnson became considerably more serious when discussing her desire to have children.
The actress admitted that she had not expected to reach her current age without already having started a family.
“I didn’t expect to be this age and at this place in my life, but for whatever reason, that’s the plan of the universe,” Johnson said.
“So I would love that. I hope that that happens for me.”
She went on to describe the feeling as something that has been particularly strong in recent years.
“I’ve always felt, especially the last few years, that there is a soul that wants to come through,” she explained. “And I hope that I’m lucky enough to be able to do that.”
Johnson said working on her upcoming film The Three Incestuous Sisters intensified those emotions because several people around her on set had young children with them.
Her co-stars Saoirse Ronan and Jessie Buckley, as well as co-producer Ro Donnelly, reportedly had their children with them during production.
“It’s hard to be around my best friends, and even on set, and everyone has their baby, and, you know, starting families, and things turned out differently than I thought,” Johnson said.
However, she added that she remains hopeful about becoming a mother.
“But it’s okay. I’m hopeful for that,” she said.
Her comments come as speculation about her personal life continues to attract attention.
Johnson was recently linked to Machine Gun Kelly after the pair were reportedly seen emerging from the same vehicle before entering a New York apartment owned by Taylor Swift.
The sighting prompted renewed speculation that the actress and rapper could be romantically involved.
Kelly, 36, whose real name is Colson Baker, is the father of two daughters.
He shares his older daughter, Casie, 17, with former partner Emma Cannon and has a younger daughter, Saga, with actress Megan Fox.
Kelly and Fox ended their relationship in late 2025 following an on-and-off romance that lasted several years. Their daughter was born several months after their split.
Meanwhile, Johnson’s relationship with Martin officially came to an end after years together. The former couple had reportedly experienced earlier periods of separation before reconciling.
Johnson was also known for maintaining a close relationship with Martin’s children and his former wife, Gwyneth Paltrow.
Her bond with the family reportedly made the breakup particularly emotional.
Paltrow and Martin were married in 2003 and separated in 2014, famously describing their split as a “conscious uncoupling.”
For now, Johnson appears determined to keep her current romantic life private.
When asked directly about her relationship status during the Vogue interview, she simply responded: “I don’t want to say anything about that.”
The actress explained that maintaining privacy has become increasingly important to her.
“I’m obsessed with people not knowing where I am or what I’m doing,” Johnson said, adding that she considers herself “far too porous and sensitive and present” to deal easily with intense public attention.
