Lauren McFarland Killed in Ambulance Crash En Route to Work

Tributes Pour in for ‘Beautiful’ Woman Killed in Car Crash with Ambulance.

COCKERMOUTH, CUMBRIA – An inquest has heard the details of a tragic road accident that claimed the life of 30-year-old Lauren McFarland when her car collided with an ambulance in the Lake District. The fatal crash, which occurred in January of last year, took place as Lauren was on her way to work. According to court proceedings, she lost control of her red Fiat Punto on a bend, causing it to spin into the path of an oncoming emergency vehicle.

Lauren, a travel adviser, was tragically pronounced dead at the scene. An inquest held at Cockermouth Coroner’s Court heard that she had just returned from a “dream holiday” to the Himalayas and Everest Base Camp and was already planning to make the same trip again later that year. Her passion for adventure and the outdoors was a central theme in the emotional tributes paid by her family.

The collision involved an ambulance returning to its base at the end of a shift. The driver, paramedic Abigail Routledge, and her colleague sustained minor injuries but immediately provided aid to Lauren. The court was told that Abigail had “no opportunity” to avoid the collision, which occurred on the single-carriageway A66. A subsequent police report confirmed that neither driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and Lauren was not using her phone at the time of the crash.

Investigation Reveals Potential Factors in the Accident

Dashcam footage from the ambulance provided key insights into the moments leading up to the collision. The video showed Lauren’s car negotiating a left-hand bend while positioned near the center line of the road. Her car then made a maneuver back towards the nearside, which caused it to rotate clockwise and cross into the path of the ambulance.

The inquest also raised the possibility of a mechanical issue contributing to the accident. Assistant coroner for Cumbria, Margaret Taylor, noted there was “some evidence of a leak of air from the rear offside tyre of Lauren’s Fiat.” While it was not definitively confirmed whether this contributed to her loss of control, the coroner acknowledged it was a possibility. Taylor concluded that Lauren died as a result of “multiple traumatic injuries sustained in a road traffic collision” and that she “should have had a long life ahead of her with many more adventures.”

Lauren’s father, David McFarland, shared details of her life, highlighting how she had “flourished” in school before earning a degree in sports therapy from London Metropolitan University. After working for the NHS in Pontefract and Leeds, she returned to Cumbria to pursue a career in the travel industry, which aligned with her love for exploration.
