Lothar Matthaus, 65, enjoyed Oktoberfest with his 27-year-old girlfriend Theresa Sommer, but the Germany legend says he has no plans for a sixth marriage.
Germany football legend Lothar Matthaus enjoyed a lively weekend at Oktoberfest with his much younger girlfriend Theresa Sommer, but the former Ballon d’Or winner has made it clear that marriage is not on the cards.
Matthaus, 65, was spotted alongside 27-year-old Sommer during the famous beer festival in Munich, where the couple joined thousands of revellers celebrating the annual Bavarian event.
The former Bayern Munich midfielder appeared in high spirits as he posed for photographs with Sommer, placing an arm around her waist while dressed in traditional Bavarian clothing.
Sommer, who is 38 years younger than Matthaus, opted for an elegant long grey satin dress featuring a brown bow as the pair attended the festivities together.
The couple have been dating for around 18 months after their relationship reportedly began following a skiing trip in Austria.
Their romance first attracted widespread attention after Matthaus and Sommer were spotted together during the trip.
At the time, the retired football star kept details of their relationship private.
“We came for skiing and the rest is a private matter,” Matthaus said when asked about the pair’s relationship.
Since then, however, Matthaus and Sommer have increasingly been seen together at high-profile sporting and social events.
The couple attended the 2025 Nations League final in Munich and have also appeared together at major football ceremonies.
Sommer accompanied Matthaus to last year’s Ballon d’Or ceremony, adding to the growing number of public appearances they have made together.
The German model and Instagram personality is also an economics graduate and has built a following through her social media presence.
Despite their regular appearances together, Matthaus has previously indicated that he has no intention of walking down the aisle again.
The football icon has already been married five times, with his most recent marriage to Anastasia Klimko ending in divorce in 2021.
Asked about his future plans earlier this year, Matthaus was unequivocal about the prospect of another wedding.
“I definitely don’t plan on getting married again,” he said.
That would mean Sommer is unlikely to become Matthaus’ sixth wife, despite the couple having been together for more than a year.
Matthaus Has Been Married Five Times
Matthaus’ romantic history has attracted considerable attention throughout his career and retirement.
He first married Silvia in 1981. The couple remained together for more than a decade before divorcing in 1992.
They had two daughters during their marriage, and Silvia continued to use the Matthaus surname following their separation.
Two years after his first divorce, Matthaus married Swiss model Lolita Morena.
The couple welcomed a son during their relationship but eventually separated in 1999.
Matthaus later married Marijana Colic in 2003. That marriage lasted approximately six years before the pair went their separate ways.
In 2008, Matthaus married Ukrainian model Kristina Liliana Chudinova in Las Vegas. Chudinova was 21 at the time of their wedding.
The marriage lasted two years before the couple split in 2010.
Matthaus’ fifth and most recent marriage came in 2014, when he married Anastasia Klimko. The pair later welcomed a son together before eventually divorcing in 2021.
Since then, Matthaus has not returned to married life.
His relationship with Sommer, however, has continued to develop in the public eye.
From World Cup Hero to Oktoberfest Regular
Matthaus remains one of the most recognizable figures in German football history.
He captained West Germany to World Cup glory in 1990 and was later awarded the prestigious Ballon d’Or, cementing his status as one of the game’s greatest midfielders of his generation.
During his playing career, Matthaus enjoyed major success at club and international level, most notably during his time with Bayern Munich and the German national team.
Now retired from professional football, he remains a familiar presence at major football events and continues to work as a pundit and commentator.
His appearance at Oktoberfest with Sommer offered another glimpse into his life away from the pitch.
The couple appeared relaxed as they posed together in traditional Bavarian surroundings, with Matthaus embracing his younger partner while enjoying one of Munich’s most famous annual celebrations.
Although the pair have been increasingly comfortable appearing together publicly, Matthaus’ comments about marriage suggest that their relationship is unlikely to result in another wedding ceremony.
For now, Matthaus and Sommer appear content to enjoy their relationship while making appearances together at major sporting and social events.
