Sophie Cunningham received a huge NASCAR welcome, meeting Austin Dillon, Jeff Gordon, Michael Jordan and several stars during a memorable race day.
WNBA star Sophie Cunningham received a warm welcome from the NASCAR community during Sunday’s Enjoy Illinois 300, meeting several of the sport’s biggest names and drawing plenty of attention during her behind-the-scenes visit to the race.

The Indiana Fever reserve was a special guest at the NASCAR Cup Series event east of St. Louis, where she had the opportunity to experience race day from inside the NASCAR environment.
Cunningham met legendary driver Jeff Gordon, interacted with team members and drivers, and even crossed paths with team owner Michael Jordan.
For Cunningham, the day quickly became more than simply attending a stock-car race.

She appeared genuinely impressed by the atmosphere surrounding NASCAR and the people she met throughout the event.
Speaking with the NASCAR on USA panel before the race, Cunningham praised the racing community and described her experience as one of the most enjoyable days she had experienced.
“You guys are salt of the earth people,” Cunningham said while discussing her time at the track.

“It’s been really cool to talk to them about racing cars and whatnot, but also just getting to know them outside of the track.”
She continued by expressing her appreciation for the welcome she received from NASCAR personalities and fans.
“You guys truly are amazing, and I’ve had a heck of a day and it’s been a lot of fun,” Cunningham said.
Austin Dillon Tells Sophie Cunningham NASCAR Is a Fan
One of the most notable moments from Cunningham’s NASCAR visit came when she met Richard Childress Racing driver Austin Dillon.
In a behind-the-scenes clip shared online, Dillon made it clear that Cunningham had already developed a significant following among some members of the NASCAR community.
“We’re huge fans,” Dillon told Cunningham before the race. “We love what you stand for. That’s the biggest thing.”
Dillon did not specifically explain which views or positions he was referring to during the exchange.
Cunningham, who is from Missouri, has attracted considerable attention outside basketball for her outspoken public comments on issues involving women’s sports and transgender athletes.
Her willingness to speak openly about those subjects has also made her a prominent figure among conservative audiences.
Dillon has similarly been associated with conservative politics and has publicly expressed support for President Donald Trump.
The interaction between Dillon and Cunningham therefore quickly became one of the more talked-about moments from her visit, particularly among fans who follow both NASCAR and the WNBA.
Sophie Cunningham Embraces NASCAR Culture
While Cunningham’s views generated attention, her visit was also notable because of how enthusiastically she embraced the NASCAR experience.
The Fever player appeared to spend much of the day meeting drivers, talking with fans and collecting NASCAR memorabilia.
She met several prominent Cup Series competitors, including Chase Elliott and Ryan Blaney.
According to USA Today, Cunningham also signed hats for Dillon’s children during her time at the track.
Blaney reportedly gave her a bottle of bourbon as another memorable souvenir from the day.
The interactions highlighted how quickly Cunningham became part of the race-day atmosphere.
Cunningham also spoke with Kenny Wallace in the pre-race fan zone about her recent interview with Colin Cowherd.
Cowherd had referred to Cunningham as the WNBA’s “sex symbol,” a description that has become part of the conversation surrounding the basketball player and her public image.
Rather than rejecting the characterization, Cunningham used the opportunity to discuss femininity and athleticism.
“All I’m saying, for all the little girls out there, that if you want to play a sport, you can still be girly, you can still go out there and kick ass, sweat, work hard, and you can still look a certain way,” Cunningham said.
“So, go do your thing.”
Her comments added another layer to a day in which Cunningham was already attracting attention from fans outside the traditional WNBA audience.
Cunningham Shows Off Race-Day Outfit
Cunningham also gave fans a glimpse of her experience during the race itself, showing off her pit-road outfit consisting of black leather shorts and a matching tank top.
Her appearance quickly became another talking point on social media, with Cunningham seemingly enjoying the attention and the unique environment of a NASCAR race.
The basketball star later summed up her experience in enthusiastic terms.
“We’re here in Illinois with NASCAR. It’s been the best day in my entire life,” Cunningham said.
“I feel like these are my people. I belong here.”
The comments reflected how comfortable Cunningham appeared to feel around the NASCAR crowd.
Her connection with the sport also comes at an interesting point in her basketball career.
With the FIBA World Cup now finished, Cunningham is preparing to return to WNBA action with the Indiana Fever.
The Fever entered the week in fifth place at 26-14 and are scheduled to travel to Toronto on Friday to face the Tempo.
Austin Dillon Finishes Sixth as Kyle Larson Wins
While Cunningham enjoyed her day away from the basketball court, Austin Dillon still had racing business to take care of.
Dillon ultimately finished sixth in Sunday’s Enjoy Illinois 300, giving Richard Childress Racing a strong result at the event.
Kyle Larson claimed the victory, taking the checkered flag in the NASCAR Cup Series race and adding another win to his impressive career record.
For Cunningham, however, the result on the track was only one part of a much bigger experience.
Her meeting with Dillon, along with conversations with Gordon, Jordan, Elliott and Blaney, gave the Fever star an unusually close look at the NASCAR world.
Her enthusiastic reaction suggested that the visit may have created a genuine connection between Cunningham and a fan base well outside professional basketball.
The behind-the-scenes footage involving Dillon has also added another dimension to Cunningham’s growing public profile.
Already known for her basketball career and outspoken personality, Cunningham continues to attract attention across different sports and entertainment audiences.
Sunday’s NASCAR appearance showed just how far that crossover appeal can extend, with Cunningham receiving a notably enthusiastic reception from drivers, fans and members of the racing community.
