When Boston transplant Sophie (Brittany Snow) arrived in the conservative socialite scene of Maple Brook, she was a fish out of water. Drawn into the alluring orbit of Margo Banks (Malin Åkerman), the charismatic wife of gubernatorial candidate Jed Banks (Dermot Mulroney), Sophie quickly found herself entangled with Margo and her inner circle, including markswoman Callie (Jaime Ray Newman) and basketball “tiger mom” Jill (Katie Lowes). As Sophie sought to bury her own past demons and fit in, she discovered that every family in Maple Brook harbored dark secrets. The situation became explosively complicated when Sophie and Margo began an affair on the same night that teenager Abby (Madison Wolfe) was brutally murdered near Margo’s lake house.

The murder investigation immediately put Sophie in the crosshairs, with her gun linked to the crime. However, as the season progressed, the web of deceit grew, revealing multiple suspects and even more victims before the truth finally emerged.

Who Killed Abby Jackson?

The central mystery of who killed Abby was a complex one, with suspicion falling on several characters. Ultimately, it was Margo Banks who pulled the trigger. Abby’s suspicions about Margo’s affair with her boyfriend, Jill’s son Brad (George Ferrier), were confirmed when Pastor Pete (Paul Teal) mistakenly informed Abby that Brad had confessed to getting “her” an abortion. Abby, realizing this meant Margo was pregnant with Brad’s child and had an abortion, confronted Margo at the lake house on July 18th. To protect her carefully constructed life and the secret of her abortion, a drunken Margo grabbed Sophie’s gun and shot Abby, killing her.

Abby’s murder ignited a chain reaction of violence within Maple Brook. Before the finale, three more characters met their demise:

• Starr (Chrissy Metz): Abby’s heartbroken mother, after learning from Sophie about Abby’s supposed abortion (actually Margo’s), armed herself and confronted Jill, believing Jill had killed Abby to protect her son’s reputation. The confrontation, though not fully shown, resulted in Jill gaining the upper hand and shooting Starr dead.
• Jill (Katie Lowes): Margo and Callie discovered Starr’s body at Jill’s house. When Jill, desperate to avoid jail, pulled a gun on Margo, Callie, a skilled markswoman, shot Jill in the chest, killing her. Brad’s revised statement subsequently led the police to close Abby and Starr’s murder cases, falsely pinning them on Jill.
• Kyle (Michael Aaron Milligan): Margo’s troubled brother. Sophie’s growing suspicions about Margo’s involvement intensified after she discovered tampons in Margo’s bathroom, a detail that contradicted Margo’s earlier claim and hinted at a recent abortion. Realizing Margo was the one Brad had impregnated, Sophie confronted Margo. This put Margo on high alert, and her brother Kyle took it upon himself to silence Sophie. He attempted to run her off the road, then confronted her outside her car. In a moment of panic, given her past vehicular homicide incident, Sophie ran him over, killing him. The season concluded with Sophie dragging Kyle’s body into the woods, dumping him, and accidentally answering his phone to hear Margo on the other end, setting up a tantalizing cliffhanger for a potential second season.

The Fate of Pastor Pete

Pastor Pete, initially a red herring in Abby’s murder, was ultimately revealed to be a predator with a disturbing history. Detective Salazar (Karen Rodriguez), investigating Abby’s phone records, discovered Pete’s alarming connection to Abby and his previous troubling assignments. When she confronted him, Pete, realizing he was exposed, fled. After a high-speed chase, he took his own life before being apprehended. Thankfully, Salazar and her backup discovered two traumatized but alive teenage girls, Nina (Abigail Rhyne) and Kaycee (Emilia Torello), in his U-Haul trailer, confirming his role in a broader kidnapping scheme.
