American Paralympic swimmer Ali Truwit survived a harrowing shark attack in May 2023, resulting in a below-the-knee amputation that she remarkably overcame to win two silver medals at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.
The Incident: What Happened to Ali Truwit?
On May 24, 2023, just two days after graduating from Yale University, former collegiate swimmer Ali Truwit faced a life-threatening crisis.
While celebrating her graduation with a vacation, Truwit was suddenly ambushed by a large shark.
The predator aggressively rammed and bumped her from underneath before biting her leg and severing her left foot at the ankle.
Leveraging her elite swimming background, Truwit and her friend, fellow Yale swim captain Sophie Pilkinton, made a split-second decision to swim for their lives.
They swam approximately 75 yards through open ocean back to their boat while the shark circled them.
Once aboard, Pilkinton applied a crucial tourniquet to stop the profuse bleeding, a decisive action credited with saving Truwit’s life. Truwit was then medevaced to Miami for emergency trauma care.
The Predator: What Type of Shark Attacked Ali Truwit?
Marine experts and reports following the incident indicate that the predator responsible for the attack was most likely a bull shark.
Witnesses and the swimmers described a massive gray shark that approached out of nowhere in waters that were not historically known for shark activity.
Bull sharks are notoriously aggressive, territorial, and capable of navigating shallow coastal waters.
The shark’s predatory behavior—ramming the swimmers from below before striking—is a classic hunting tactic utilized by large ambush sharks.
The Setting: Where Was Ali Truwit Snorkeling?
The attack occurred off the coast of the Turks and Caicos Islands, an archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean known for its crystal-clear waters and popular coral reefs.
Truwit and Pilkinton were snorkeling from a boat excursion when they encountered the predator.
According to records from the Florida Museum’s International Shark Attack File, Truwit’s encounter was the only unprovoked shark attack recorded in Turks and Caicos throughout the entirety of 2023, underscoring the statistical rarity of the event.
Triumph Over Adversity: What Disability Does Ali Truwit Have?
As a direct result of the severe trauma from the attack, Ali Truwit lives with an amputation of her left leg below the knee.
After being stabilized at the Ryder Trauma Center in Miami, she was transferred to a specialized facility in New York.
On her 23rd birthday, doctors performed a transtibial amputation to fight off persistent infection and optimize her future mobility with a prosthetic limb.
Refusing to let the physical disability sideline her passions, Truwit began walking on a prosthetic leg and returned to the pool just weeks after her surgery.
She qualified for Team USA and competed at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, winning two silver medals in the S10 400m freestyle and 100m backstroke.
Since then, she has broken American records, completed the New York City Marathon, and founded a non-profit organization dedicated to disability awareness.
